i'm very frustrated with the way real madrid's galactico's initiative is ruining european soccer. signing ronaldo, kaka, benzema, and probably ribery soon in the future at astronomical fees is absurd. every target of man u has been stolen by madrid except valencia. i agree one could argue that an established team (like man u, chelsea, liverpool, arsenal) does a similar thing to teams that have no money and one solid player, but these teams don't go spending $300 million in 10 days on all attacking players. madrid's galacticos program embodies their absurd nature of a club of individualistic attacking midfielders who will be so focused on their egos they fail to win the champions league while their payroll matches most of the teams in the champions league combined.
my obsession with united is what amplifies my frustration with madrid. united had the best player in the world, ronaldo. however, madrid would not stop rumors and speculation about obtaining ronaldo for over a year. real hyped the transfer saga so much that ronaldo basically decided he wasn't commited to his current employer, manchester united, and could be bought to play for the team of his childhood dream. the saga escalated ronaldo's ego into thinking he was bigger than united which always leads to the exit of players no matter how good they are (beckham, van nistelroy, etc.) finally, it came to a point where united had to sell him because he thought he was bigger than the team and these rumors would have gone on the rest of his united career. so fine. we eventually sold him when madrid offered the highly inflated 80 million pound transfer fee. but to make matters worse. madrid has done the same thing on all of united's potential replacements for ronaldo( benzema and soon ribery).
sorry but i am furious as madrid continue to bully their way through european soccer. perhaps it shows the need for a european salary cap.
Let's Go United!
And I will go ahead and counter any responses of people claiming United is a wealthy club. United has never been and will never be the yankees of soccer because they refuse to throw astronomical transfer fees at all star players. rarely have they ever thrown fees above 40 million pounds. most of their talent comes from their youth program or players they signed at modest prices (e.g. ronaldo for 20 million pounds) who develop into sensational stars. The only exception is berbatov who hasn't lived up to his 32 million pound price tag for some reason.
